PLC programming languages, from Ladder to Instruction List<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

PLC programming languages<\/strong> are distinguished in graphic and text languages. In one of our articles<\/a> we already talked about PLCs and how you program a PLC<\/a>, but we just mentioned which programming languages are the most used. Let us see, then, what are those programming languages and how they differ from one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graphic Languages<\/strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As we already saw, programming languages fall under two categories: graphic languages and text languages, regulated by the CEI EN 61131-3 regulation<\/a>. The three most used graphic languages <\/strong>are Ladder Diagram (LD), Sequential Functional Chart (SFC) and Function Block Diagram (FBD)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Particularly, Ladder Diagram<\/strong> was the most used<\/strong> PLC language until a couple of years ago<\/strong> and it resembles<\/strong> both the graphics and symbols used in electric circuits,<\/strong> so that even someone<\/strong> who<\/strong> never worked with programming languages, but has some electronic training<\/strong>, could<\/strong> intuitively understand<\/strong> how to program a PLC<\/strong>, using input and output symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sequentional Functional Chart,<\/strong> on the other hand, is the most currently used<\/strong> and it allows to easily integrate machines and robots to an automation plant.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dulcis in fundo, <\/em>we have Functional Block Diagram<\/strong>, a program very similar to the circuit diagrams used by electronic technicians.<\/p>\n\n\n

Text languages<\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The text languages<\/strong> are Structured Text (ST) and Instruction List (IL). <\/strong>They look more like the classic programming languages, to the point that Instruction List <\/strong>has replaced Ladder Diagram as the<\/strong> most used programming tool in system integration companies that specialise in PLC programs. <\/strong>Moreover, Instruction List can be “exported” by Ladder<\/strong> and allows for a more structured programming <\/strong>than Ladder Diagram, this also being one of the reasons why it’s preferred to the graphic language.<\/p>\n\n\n
