What is IoT (Internet of Things)?

The Internet of things (IoT) describes devices that connect and exchange data with other devices over the Internet or other networks. It is important, though, to make clear that the Internet of Things can be a bit of a misnomer:the devices included in an IoT system only need to be connected to a network and be individually addressable.

IoT Industry 4.0

It is no secret that industrial IIoT plays a key role in Industry 4.0 systems. Moreover, IoT is also a key element to implement smart production and turn one’s factory in a smart factory.

More in detail, what makes an IoT system possible is the ability of the softwares installed to communicate with other systems. An example is a SCADA able to monitor every machine and sensor installed on a production line, and transmit the gathered information to the management departments, thus connecting two parts of a company that usually behave like two different worlds.

It is important to note that, when we talk about IoT applied to an industrial environment, we are now talking about an Industrial Internet of Thing, IIoT for short.

An industrial Internet of things the new generations

Long story short, an industrial iot is not just a key element in a smart factory, but is vital to have a working environment more suitable for the new generations.

By new generations, of course, we are not just talking about young people working in sales or production management, that need to monitor production processes from their offices. New generations also include young people actually working on a production line, more digitally educated than their older colleagues and more keen to learn how to use digital controls to run production.
