SCADA systems
What are they and what do they do?
Scada systems ─ or Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition ─ are informatic systems used to remote live control and supervise industrial processes and infrastructural systems.
This control system is able to connect structures, machines and devices placed in an industrial environment, reporting live every information and status of the connected elements.
How are SCADA systems made?
SCADA monitoring systems features different components, among which the most important are:
- A desktop or Touch Panel PC that periodically collects data through a dedicated software, from the connected PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), and processes them to get useful information that is then recorded. The supervisory PC displays the processed data and parameters on screen, allowing the human operator to live control all the devices and systems managed by the SCADA ─ this also allows for a rapid intervention, if needed. The information collected from the production environment is then recorded on a database, making it possible to supervise all the system statuses and the triggered alarms.
- One (or more) PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) that is used to run and manage the production plant. Specifically, PLCs check the actual conditions of all sensors and measurement instruments, process the gathered information and run all the plant’s outlets following a programmed logic.
- A communication system between the PLCs and the supervisory computer to share the collected data (LAN, WAN or fieldbus).
These control systems can be connected to data acquisition systems for the plant management (MES, MRP, SAP, ecc.), to share information about the machines’ conditions, production and the maintenance operations.
The benefits of SCADA systems
A system equipped with a SCADA software will allow you to cut your machine supervision costs and not only get you live access to all your industrial process information, but also to detect and correct the plant’s errors and inefficiencies. Furthermore, your devices will communicate with each other, constantly checking on the other machineries and components status.
Which SCADA works better for me?
Before you pick up a specific SCADA system and software, it is very important to check if it will be compatible with the company’s hardware. It is also very important to choose an infrastructure able to remote access the system from different devices (tablets, smartphones, laptops, etc.).
Relying on professionals is also the best way to get a SCADA that is safe and suits your requirements.
